Queen Latifah on Her Mother's Battle with Scleroderma

Queen Latifah on Her Mother's Battle with Scleroderma

Despite her very public persona, Queen Latifah has long been private about her family life. But last spring as she was ramping up production for her syndicated daytime talk show, The Queen Latifah Show, the entertainer was taking on a personal commitment to take charge of her mother Rita Owens’s round-the-clock medical needs.

Owens, 64, was diagnosed last year with scleroderma, an incurable autoimmune disease that has caused scar tissue build up (pulmonary fibrosis) in her lungs. Owens also has pulmonary hypertension (blood pressure in the lungs), which impacts her ability to breathe.

“I wasn’t going to do the show unless she came here,” Latifah tells PEOPLE in its latest issue. “I knew she was dealing with her health issues sometimes and I would not be able to get to her as easily.”

Despite the challenges caring for someone who's ill, Latifah, 44, says she can’t imagine anyone else looking after her mother.
“Anyone who has a job and then has a family member at home who is ill, it’s 24 hours. You have to be there. They need you,” says Latifah, who enlisted friends and family members to help out while she’s at work. “I try to be as in the moment and as present as possible. And then I try to get some sleep and go to work and be present there and then go home and be present there.”

“It’s not a day or night that she doesn’t peek her head in my room and make sure I’m okay,” says Owens, a former high school teacher. “If it’s medical she’ll go in and grill the doctors and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to do. She sacrifices her time, her resources. She genuinely loves me and I know that.”

Amanda Bynes Case: Judge Delays Decision to Grant Parents Legal Control

Amanda Bynes Case: Judge Delays Decision to Grant Parents Legal Control

A judge in Oxnard, Calif., is taking extra precautions before handing over legal control of Amanda Bynes's life to her parents.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser stated that, because the actress is currently under a 14-day psychiatric holdafter a reported driveway-burning incident, an emergency decision wasn't necessary.

Rick, 68, and Lynn Bynes, 66, appeared somber as they attended the Friday hearing along with their attorney Tamar Arminak, who stated that the reason for the conservatorship application was because the parents feared their daughter would be released following her three-day hold.

Reiser set a new hearing for Aug. 9, when he hopes Amanda would be present in court, facilitated by her court-appointed attorney, Mary Shea.
"I need to have a dialogue with [the actress] to gauge the propriety of a conservatorship to move forward," Reiser said. "There are issues of liberty and property."

It appears the actress's parents have limited access to their daughter in the hospital because Arminak told the judge the facility forbade them from giving formal notice to the actress of the conservatorship application.

Legal experts say that even though an adult is having a psychiatric episode, if the patient does not sign a consent to allow family members to get involved, a hospital by law must honor the patient's privacy.

In the meantime, the judge ordered a routine court investigation of the case, which includes a formal report from Bynes's doctors.

Bynes's parents and their lawyer had no immediate comment.

Shailene Woodley: Jennifer Lawrence Gave Me 'Really Beautiful Advice' About Fame

Shailene Woodley: Jennifer Lawrence Gave Me 'Really Beautiful Advice' About Fame

Shailene Woodley got some sage advice from someone who knows what it's like to be the face of a major movie franchise.

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, 21, got straight to the point when it came to helping guide Woodley, also 21, as excitement builds for her upcoming Divergent series.

Woodley, who calls the instruction "really beautiful advice," told Vanity Fair that Lawrence said simply, "[The experience] will be the best thing that ever happened. But don't be an idiot, do a sex tape [or] do drugs. And go to Whole Foods when your movie opens."

Woodley, who still has "yet to meet Jennifer in the flesh," says it was "nice asking someone who has been through the process and is kind of seasoned in the young-adult franchise."
During Comic-Con's Divergent panel on Thursday, Woodley, who addressed her own Hunger Games audition, told reporters that the Best Actress Oscar winner told her how much she appreciates being a part of the franchise "and how much it's changed her life for the positive or in positive ways."

"She kind of helped me on this journey initially," Woodley added

Prince William & Kate Wait Out Final Hours of Pregnancy at Kensington Palace

With their baby due any day nowPrince William and Kate are home in London at Kensington Palace on Saturday morning as they wait out the final hours of Kate's pregnancy

The couple are thought to have come from the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, about 55 miles west of London, so they can be closer to the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's hospital, where Kate expects to give birth.

Their office will not confirm the couple's whereabouts but says they will only do so when Kate, 31, has entered the hospital.

St. Mary's is just two miles from their home at Nottingham Cottage within the Kensington Palace compound
Despite reports on Friday that the royals had left Bucklebury, police protection officers were back at the gates of the Middletons' manor house in the late evening.

But there is no visible security at the home on Saturday.

William is now using up vacation time rather than going back to North Wales for his next round of shifts as a helicopter rescue pilot. He is expected to be on parental leave once the baby is born.

Kanye West Is Under Police Investigation After Altercation with Videographer

Kanye West Is Under Police Investigation After Altercation with Videographer

New dad Kanye West may be in trouble with the law.

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation after West allegedly attacked videographer Daniel Ramos outside Los Angeles International Airport on Friday.

The altercation, caught on camera andposted on TMZ, took place after Ramos filmed the rapper and asked him questions as he walked out of the airport to a waiting car.

At one point in the video, an irritated West, 36, breaks his silence and accuses the paparazzo of trying to provoke him. "You're trying to get me in trouble so I have to pay you, like, $250,000," West says in the footage. He then appears to lunge at Ramos.
"Kanye hates when the paparazzi speaks to him," a photographer source tells PEOPLE. "He got very annoyed with the videographer and lost it."

According to police Sergeant Belinda L. Nettles, paramedics responded and transported Ramos to a local hospital for medical attention. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

"A police report was taken by the Los Angeles Police Department and the investigation is ongoing," Nettles said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Although TMZ reports that police will refer the case to the D.A. as a felony attempted robbery (a more serious charge) rather than a battery case, Officer Sara Faden tells PEOPLE, "We can confirm that our detectives are handling the case, however, we're not sure if a misdemeanor or felony charge will be filed. The charge will determine if it goes to the City Attorney or D.A.'s office."

West's rep could not be reached for comment.

Ramos is no stranger to quarreling with celebrities. In 2007 Britney Spears bashed his SUV with an umbrella after he pursued and photographed her.

Olivia Munn: ‘I Find a Way to Work Around’ My Lash-Pulling Disorder

Olivia Munn: ‘I Find a Way to Work Around’ My Lash-Pulling Disorder

It’s hard to believe when you see her confident performance on The Newsroom, but Olivia Munn suffers from anxiety so severe that it causes her to pull out her own eyelashes.
“It’s called trichotillomania,” the actress, 33, told PEOPLE Wednesday at the L’Oreal Women in Digital Awards in N.Y.C. “It’s the same thing as people who bite their nails.”

Munn’s condition, which began when she was 26, is triggered by big social situations. “If I were to walk into someone’s birthday party, I’d have a bad anxiety attack,” she admits, which in turn causes her to start lash-pulling.
Fortunately, the star’s experience in the makeup chair has given her the know-how to put together an easy fix. “I just created my own little lash-band with individuals,” she says, adding that she has a powder mix that she applies to her eyelids to help the false lashes adhere.
The rest of her beauty routine is simple: relying on “a good lip balm [she likes a Body Shop one] and a hair tie” to beat the summer heat.
And her final beauty must: Showing off her freckles. “I’ve had them since I can remember … it’s just my skin,” she tells PEOPLE. “I don’t like it when people try to cover them up!”
